Ingress Protection (IP) rating is the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against foreign bodies and moisture. In an IP rating, the letters “IP” are followed by a two numbers that indicate the degree of protection provided, according to the British Standard BS EN 60529:1992. The first digit represents the level of protection against solid materials (i.e., dust, dirt, tools, body parts, etc.); the second digit represents the level of protection against water in various amounts and pressures (i.e., dripping water, powerful water jets, immersion, etc.)
