The Clean Air Act (CCA) is a United States federal law that authorizes the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate air emissions to protect public health and the environment. The CAA:
- Established the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), which set specific air quality requirements and require large industrial entities to control their contributions to air pollution
- Created New Source Performance Standards (NSPS) to regulate the amount of permissible emissions from newly constructed or modified facilities
- Introduced the National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) to control emissions of particularly dangerous pollutants
- Set requirements for phasing out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and halons to prevent further depletion of Earth’s ozone layer
For the purposes of maintenance management, maintenance organizations subject to CAA regulations must monitor and document equipment performance, emissions data, and maintenance activities related to pollution control.
