IEC 61511 is part of a series of international standards developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that establishes requirements for the lifecycle management of safety instrumented systems (SIS) used in process industries. The standard outlines how each SIS must be assessed, designed, engineered, verified, installed, operated, maintained, and continuously improved to ensure functional safety. IEC 61511 is widely recognized as the international counterpart to the U.S.-based ISA84 standard.
