5S is a methodology for organizing workplaces so that they are suitable for lean production. Originally developed by Toyota, 5S is part of Toyota’s Lean Manufacturing Methodology that focuses on reducing waste within an organization, thereby creating an environment where work can be performed efficiently, effectively, and safely.
The term “5S” is derived from five Japanese terms that begin with the letter “S”:
- Seiri (Sort): To determine what tools, parts, instructions, etc. are required for operations and remove unneeded ones.
- Seiton (Set in Order): To organize remaining items into neat, logical arrangements for efficient location and use.
- Seiso (Shine): To keep workspaces clean and well-maintained.
- Seiketsu (Standardize): To perform the seiri, seiton, and seiso on a regular basis.
- Shitsuke (Sustain): To commit to conducting 5S so as to form long-term habits and make 5S part of the company culture.
