A standard operating procedure (SOP) is a document that describes the activities required to complete a task or process. SOPs describe the interaction between departments, and typically include who is responsible, what work needs to be done, and when the work should be performed. Details about “how” work should be done is included in other documentation, such as a standard maintenance procedure (SMP) or work instructions (WI).
