As an asset management metric, availability is a measurement of the percentage a time equipment is operable, where operation is not prevented by a malfunction. In a manufacturing environment, this translates to the percentage of time equipment was producing goods vs. stopped due to repairs.
An asset’s availability can be thought of as its “uptime,” or the likelihood that the asset is not experiencing unplanned downtime. To calculate availability, divide the actual working time (uptime) by the potential working time (the sum of uptime and downtime). Then, multiply by 100 to express the value as a percentage.
