Personal protective equipment (PPE) is clothing or equipment that minimizes an employee’s exposure to chemical, biological, and physical hazards that have the potential to cause injuries or illness. Basic types of PPE include:

  • Face and eye protection: goggles, helmets, face shields, etc.
  • Respiratory protection: respirators, breathing apparatuses, filtering face pieces, etc.
  • Skin and body protection: clothing, gloves, safety shoes, coveralls, etc.
  • Hearing protection: earplugs, safety earmuffs, canal caps, etc.
